Bringing Book Characters to Life Through Makeup
You’ve just finished reading your new favorite novel. The final page closes, but the world doesn’t quite leave you. A spark of inspiration hits like lightning, and suddenly you want to step into the story yourself.
The outfit? That part is easy. There’s probably something in your closet that can get you close enough.
But the real question is: how do we transform our everyday makeup into the makeup of a fictional character?
Let’s find out together.
For today’s transformation, we’re stepping into the world of A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas and bringing the iconic Feyre Archeron to life.
Step 1: Preparing the Canvas
Before any magic happens, we prep the skin.
Even though fictional characters seem to have flawless skin at all times, real life doesn’t work that way—and that’s perfectly fine. Our skin has texture, personality, and little imperfections that make it uniquely ours.
So let’s give it the care it deserves.
Start by washing your face with a gentle cleanser. Follow with hydrating serums to plump the skin, then seal everything in with a moisturizer.
If you want a small luxury moment, place under-eye masks on after cleansing and before your serums. They help reduce puffiness and add a little glow before makeup begins.
Now our canvas is ready.
Step 2: Shaping the Expression
I like to begin with brows.
You can absolutely do brows after foundation if that’s your preference, but starting here helps set the tone of the character.
Using a clear brow gel (or even a small amount of hair gel), brush your brow hairs into the general shape you want. This gives us a guide before filling anything in.
Feyre is determined, courageous, loyal, and compassionate. Brows are one of the most expressive parts of the face, so we want that personality reflected here.
Instead of a sharp or dramatic arch, create a soft arch. Not completely rounded, but slightly softened so her strength feels balanced with warmth.
Once the shape is set, gently clean any residue around the brows with a cotton pad and a little water or makeup remover.
Step 3: Building the Base
Now we move into complexion.
Apply your primer, followed by a full-coverage foundation. If you’re dressing as a character, chances are you’ll be taking photos—whether on your phone or professionally—so a solid base helps everything translate well on camera.
Here’s a small pro tip: skip foundation under the eyes.
Instead, apply concealer only where you need it. A little goes a long way and helps avoid creasing.
We can also use that concealer to lightly carve around the brows and prime the eyelids. Simply outline the brow edges and blend the product outward until it melts into the surrounding skin.
Step 4: Sculpting the Face
Next comes contour.
Because Feyre lives in a fantasy world filled with dramatic lighting and sharp landscapes, we want a contour that adds believable depth.
Use a cool, grey-toned contour cream beneath the cheekbones, along the jawline, on the sides of the nose bridge, and around the edges/top of the forehead.
Once blended, add a soft pink cream blush to the cheekbones and lightly across the nose. This brings life back into the skin and gives that slightly windswept, storybook look.
Set each cream product with its corresponding powder, then finish with a touch of translucent powder to lock everything in place.
Step 5: The Freckles
Feyre wouldn’t feel complete without her freckles.
You can create them a few different ways:
A freckle pen
Brown brow pomade with a tiny brush
Or the toothbrush method
The toothbrush method is exactly what it sounds like: dip a clean toothbrush into brown pomade, then gently flick the bristles to disperse the pigment naturally across the skin.
Freckles should look random and imperfect. That’s what makes them believable.
Step 6: Eyes That Tell a Story
Now we move to the eyes—the place where most emotion lives.
Feyre’s eyes are soft, but there’s a quiet rebellion behind them. Strength mixed with loyalty.
To capture that, apply a soft brown eyeshadow across the lid.
Next, line the waterline with thin black eyeliner and blend brown shadow under the eyes to create a subtle micro-smoky effect.
Finish with a medium wing liner, mascara, and wispy lashes. The result is expressive, but not overly dramatic.
Step 7: Lips
For lips, a nude lipstick or gloss works beautifully for Feyre’s natural look.
Personally, I chose a soft brown lip because it felt right for my version of the look.
Remember: cosplay and character makeup aren’t about perfect accuracy. They’re about creativity and enjoyment.
Step 8: The Finishing Touches
Now we seal the magic.
Apply setting spray and add highlight to the cheekbones, the bridge and tip of the nose, and the brow bone.
Suddenly, the entire look catches the light in a way that feels a little more… otherworldly.
Step 9: The Fantasy Details
But can it really be a fantasy transformation without a few extra elements?
If you’d like, apply fae ear prosthetics using a small amount of lash glue to keep them secure.
And of course, there’s Feyre’s iconic arm tattoo.
You can purchase a ready-made version from Sparrow & Wilde, draw it using waterproof eyeliner for a one-day look, or use alcohol-activated body paint for a longer-lasting effect.
Just keep in mind that alcohol paints stay on much longer—so commit wisely.
And just like that, we’ve stepped out of our everyday routine and into the pages of a fantasy novel.
Makeup has a special way of letting us play inside the stories we love. Sometimes all it takes is a brush, a little imagination, and the courage to see ourselves as the characters who inspire us.
So next time you finish a book and feel that spark of creative energy…
You’ll know exactly where to start. ✨
